Well done to Year 12 student Tom Beach who is the first of this year’s cohort to achieve his Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. Tom was presented with his certificate in special assembly by Mr Hooper who co-ordinates the scheme at Brooke Weston.

Tom did a combination of voluntary work and physical skills, as well as taking part in the recent expedition to the Peak District to gain the award and has previously attained the Bronze award. He said: ‘As I am studying A Level Spanish I volunteered to work with Miss Prats’s Year 7 Spanish class to help with their grammar. I did it for an hour a week for three month and it gave me an insight into teaching. For my skill I did first aid for an hour a week and I gained a lot from the scheme, including experiences from the expedition like map reading.

My advice to people who want to take part in the scheme would be to try to get it done as soon as possible. Start your skill, volunteering and physical activities at the same time if and if you get Bronze before Silver then it makes Silver easier and the same with Gold. Taking part in the scheme is definitely going to help with my UCAS application and it will be good for job applications, CVs and personal statements. The whole of the expedition was probably the best bit because I did it with my mates and it was quite good fun!’

A total of 12 other Brooke Weston students are currently working towards the Silver Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme.

Mr Hooper said: ‘Congratulations to Tom as he managed to pack a lot of activities into a relatively short space of time to complete this award. The scheme is a great way for young people to try out new skills and activities and push themselves, both mentally and physically, and they gain a great deal from taking part in terms of comradeship, leadership and self-reliance.’
