Actor Warwick Davis and Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of the Final Fantasy series, were just two of the stars that Brooke Weston students met at a convention devoted to games, films, movies, anime, sci-fi and comics.
Sakaguchi has sold over 100 million copies of his games worldwide and some of our students queued for up to two hours to meet him and get a signed poster. Warwick Davis has appeared in Star Wars, Willow, the Harry Potter films and, most recently, the television series, Life’s Too Short. Around 6,000 visitors dressed as their favourite characters and toured the Midlands Comic Con exhibition, held annually at Telford.
Students from the two Brooke Weston manga book groups as well as Sixth Formers Iona Smith, Nina Mistry and Vicky Coppard went along. The students were accompanied by Mr Barrett and Librarian Mrs Adams who said: ‘Our students were particularly keen on Warwick Davis and we saw him and his family on the way in. It was just buzzing and a very friendly atmosphere.'
Iona said: 'I got into manga and anime when I was little without even realising it, I used to watch Pokemon all the time and just think it was a cartoon. Then a few of my friends started reading manga so I gave it a go and loved it. It wasn't until I started watching anime like Deathnote and Ouran Highschool Host Club that I was told that Pokemon was an anime too! I have loads of favourite characters but in particular I love the character No Face from the anime movie 'Spirited Away'.
'My favourite part was definitely meeting Warwick Davis, I really admire him as an actor. I was so happy to get his signed autobiography. A lot of us also met Hironobu Sakaguchi. The best costumes, we call them cosplays, had to be the Spiderman as well as the storm troopers that are always there. It was a bit sad because this was mine, Nina's and Vicky's last expo before we go to university.’
Year 7 student Trisha De Guzman said: 'My favourite part of the manga was buying a bag and my copic markers because I love to draw manga! I met quite a lot of people including the artist who calls herself destinyblue, and I got to meet the creator of Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. It was really fun!'
