Year 10 student Hayden Sutherland is designing a scale model of the Brooke Weston building that he plans to complete in just over three months. Hayden is using the online game platform, Roblox, to construct the design. He has previously used the site to replicate landmarks including Big Ben and the London Eye, as well as the set used in Mock the Week.
The software enables users to select and position bricks to create interactive interiors with working lights, doors and internal features that can be populated with characters.
Hayden started using the site years ago and only recently rediscovered his hobby: ‘I have already completed a lot of the Performing Arts area. I gauge the measurement from plans of the school on the website and I am also using photographs to get the scale right. It is a big task but I might be able to get it done by March.
‘There are two types of brick, a resize tool and a move-and-tilt tool so you can make the result as accurate as possible. I started as a hobby and people online have bought some of my models with virtual money which is earned either by logging onto the site or by selling the finished structure. I spend approximately an hour a day on the site and sometimes the areas I am working on are so detailed that it takes an hour just to replicate half of a staircase!’
