Sixth Formers are getting down to some serious training with the BW Triathlon team. The group of 34 students meets on Wednesday afternoons as part of the IEC diploma. They are getting in shape for an triathlon next year, and have taken an initial fitness test to gauge their improvement over the coming months.
Mr Clasper and Mr Gillespie teach the sessions that have included touch relays across the sports hall, relays with hurdles and speed work, followed by runs of between three and six miles, as well as swimming sessions at Corby pool.
Mr Clasper said: ‘At the moment the students are doing indoor athletics, some sprints for power and strength and slightly longer runs for muscular and cardio-vascular endurance. We also work them hard when their muscles are tired as they need to get used to producing quick bursts of activity in the transition period of a triathlon, such as swapping from the pool to a bike, or from the bike to a sprint.’
Student Paige Strudwick said: ‘I was pretty fit beforehand because I do ballet but this training helps with stamina. I really love swimming when we trod water, did warm-up laps and races. I like exercising, especially with friends.’
Jake Brigstock added: ‘I played cricket and, although I have only been doing these activities for a few weeks, my fitness has improved by a massive amount. There is a really good team spirit and everyone has fun.’
