World champion Sam Lewin has appeared on BBC’s The One Show, meeting celebrity guests and demonstrating his conker-playing skills. Sam, from Year 9, won the Intermediate class in the 2010 World Conker Championship and will defend his title next month.
In the run-up to the event he, and other reigning champions in the men’s, women’s and junior categories, was invited to appear on the show to reprise his winning moves.
Sam said: ‘Being on live television was more nerve-racking than being in the finals of the conker championship! We had a rehearsal and I briefly spoke to Chris Evans and Alex Jones before the show. It was a really good experience seeing how it was all filmed. I got to meet Philip Glenister from Ashes to Ashes and Fiona Bruce and they were both quite friendly.’
Sam had not played conkers much before he clinched the title: ‘It was a shock as I only entered the competition for a bit of fun! I won six or seven games to get through to the final. There were no tactics involved, I just tried to hit my opponent’s conker as hard as I could and tried not to get a snag, which is where the strings knot together. I got a trophy and some merchandise from the event’s sponsor and I am looking forward to this year’s competition which takes place near Oundle.’
