The excesses of rock and roll and the excitement of the Rugby World Cup are the subjects of two new displays in the library.
A consignment of rugby-themed books has been purchased to coincide with the eagerly-awaited competition that kicks off in New Zealand later this week. As well as the student-designed display there is a crossword and a wordsearch competition.
Mrs Adams said: ‘There are official rugby balls and books as prizes. The wordsearch is fairly easy while the crossword is harder. Entry forms are available from the library and students must hand them in before the end of term.’
Mr Jones’s display, ‘The Late Greats’, has been inspired by members of the ’27 Club'; musicians that met untimely deaths at that age. He said: ‘Students may have first heard of the 27 Club with the demise of Amy Winehouse. The display and books focus on her and others, such as Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix. It is primarily about the 27 Club but also includes people like Nick Drake and Sid Vicious.
‘For those who are just starting to get into music, perhaps because they have seen the recent media coverage about the 27 Club, this may inspire them to check out other artists, such as Janis Joplin, who, like Amy, had a powerful voice but died tragically young. The psychedelic display is a nod to the photo-homages in publications like Rolling Stone and the NME!’
