Sixth Formers could join a new triathlon squad that trains on Wednesday afternoons from September. If the idea proves popular, sports teacher Mr Clasper plans to hold regular training sessions at different venues with the aim that all of the participants enter for a triathlon next year. There will also be intermediate events and competitions in the months leading up to the main event.
The scheme will be open to next September’s Year 12 students (current Year 11s who are returning) as part of the IEC diploma, and it would be helpful if they could register their interest by emailing Mr Clasper now so he can gauge the level of demand. If there are too few people to make the triathlon training viable then an alternative fitness programme will go ahead incorporating jogging and body conditioning sessions.
He said: ‘The proposed triathlon team will be an amalgamation of fund-raising, a personal challenge, a continuation of the IEC programme and a fitness regime. Students do not have to be super-fit to join as they will gain a basic level of fitness after about eight to 12 weeks. Each week we will be undertaking some form of practice and fitness testing. It will give students the option of not doing a competitive sport but still attaining and then maintaining a level of stamina.
‘I would like the Sixth Formers to do it with the sole objective of completing a team or individual triathlon depending on their capabilities. There is a Corby triathlon next year that we can aim for, as well as sprint races and events up towards that in the interim. In order to make the group viable we would need to sign up at least 15 students, so if anyone is interested then they should email as soon as possible.’
