Physiognomy, lieutenant, chauffeur, connoisseur and reconnaissance were just some of the words tackled by students in a recent ‘Spelling Bee’. The competition, where students have to spell complex words that are said aloud to them, was organised by English teacher Mr Markus Wilson.
The whole school got involved as each tutor group competed to find its ‘champion’ to go through to the Year Group stage. Those victors then took part in the Grand Final where Sam Ford from Year 8, Year 9 student Kiran Joshi and Sixth Former David Barry triumphed after correctly spelling 19, 22 and 26 words out of 30 respectively.
The year group champions all received iPod shuffles and a voucher while overall winner, David Barry, semi-finalist in the Sixth Form competition, will receive a special prize after taking over at the last minute from Amber Powell, who was unable to attend the competition final.
