Boys from the Year 7 rugby squad have played their first-ever 15-a-side match, finishing with an impressive 40-14 victory. The boys, many of whom haven’t played rugby before, had a friendly with Ferrers School at the Stewarts and Lloyds ground in Occupation Road.
The teacher from Ferrers refereed while Mr Clasper was on the pitch giving coaching tips to players from both teams. He said: ‘There are so many people on the pitch a novice Year 7 may not know where he goes when he is attacking. What we lacked in experience we made up for in effort and sheer determination. It was fantastic, the lads gave absolutely everything.’
The rugby development officer from Stewarts and Lloyds watched the match and was really impressed with the performance from the team, especially as it was their first ever game with 15 players. Year 7 rugby practice takes place after school on Thursdays except when there is a match. All are welcome although, with a current pool of 33 at practice competition for places in the final squad is fierce.
