Sixth Former Kyle Smith has struck up a friendship with a German student he hosted on an exchange visit. He first met Sven Merseburger a year ago after offering him accommodation when a group of students from the Bismarckschule visited. Since then they keep in touch by email and Kyle has spent time with Sven in Hannover.
Kyle said: 'We got on well from the beginning; we are both into sports and were trying to beat each other at Mariokart on the Wii! Sven asked me there for New Year and I got to meet his family and see his school. It was a gymnasium, like our grammar schools, and was very different, they only work in the mornings and finish about one or two in the afternoon. They don't wear uniform, just jeans and hoodies and the building is about 100 years old with an observatory!
'They were very welcoming and I met a lot of his friends. I write to him in German and he writes to me in English and we correct each other's mistakes. Mr Nicholls encourages us to learn more about the culture of the language we are studying to help understand what underpins the language. I think visiting Germany really helped with my GCSE speaking exams as I felt more confident having spent time there and I am planning to go back there for the Berlin study trip next year.'
