Student Zoe Pygott designed her own magazine during work experience at a local publishers. Zoe spent two weeks working at Lance Publishing in Kettering which produces modelling and armed forces magazines. Zoe worked with the latest industry-standard software and was given expert help and advice during the two-week placement.
Zoe enjoyed it so much that she is now planning to study graphic design and pursue it as a career, with her ultimate aim to work on fashion magazines. One of her hobbies already is to scrutinise top glossies like Vogue to see which photos have been digitally enhanced and what techniques the designers have used to give maximum visual impact.
She said: 'I hadn't used a Mac before so I had to learn how to use that then all the programs like InDesign and Photoshop. In my spare time I looked at tutorials on the internet so I got a head start. I had to edit pictures and learn how to do all the layouts. I produced all the adverts and the editor's letter myself. I did two draft versions and printed them out. The designers at Lance critiqued it and I did a final version. They showed me where else I could make improvements and spent time giving me feedback; it was really valuable experience.'
