Four Brooke Weston mathematicians pitted their wits against teams from other schools in the UK Mathematics Trust Team Challenge. The regional finals comprised sessions where students had four 45-minute tests of cross numbers, relay races and other similar challenges.
The day-long event, at Caroline Chisholm School in Northampton, attracted a total of 22 school teams. The Brooke Weston contingent comprised Year 9 students, Kirsty Rustage and Kate Wallis, along with Bradley Hansen and Tho-Quang Nguyen from Year 7. Bradley and Tho-Quang were the only Year 7s to take part in the tournament, the other participants being from Years 8 and 9.
Teacher, Mr Costello said: 'The group got off to a steady start and quickly gathered momentum scoring close to the top three schools in the later rounds. Overall we came 7th and all four pupils represented the school to a very high standard with Bradley and Tho-Quang standing out as very talented mathematicians. Unfortunately we didn't gain a place in the National Finals but we hope to take part in both the Junior and Senior Team Challenges next year. Year 7 and 8 will be taking part in individual challenges at the end of this term.'
