Two former students, Matt Coleman and Jemma Neal, won prizes in a writing competition with stories they wrote while still at Brooke Weston. They submitted entries to the 'author vs author' competition and now Jemma has won gold in the young adult category with 'Glamour' and Matt, who wrote 'Grande Dame' has been awarded silver in the adult group.
The competition ran in conjunction with regional newspapers and Jemma and Matt were winners in the Kettering Evening Telegraph area. Jemma's story will now appear in a book 'Tall Tales and Short Stories' which features all the winning entries. Both Jemma and Matt left Brooke Weston after taking their A Levels in the summer with Jemma going on to study beauty therapy and Matt working towards an English Literature and creative writing degree.
Simon Mitchell the competition director said: 'We launched the competition in 35 local papers and the result has been overwhelming. We have had over 2,000 stories submitted and we are going to publish the local winners in two collections of short stories. We are now planning a much bigger roll out for 2009 and will once again be working with the newspapers of Johnston Press plc.'
