A six foot eight inch high skateboarding poet will be a guest at this year's Brooke Weston Book Week! Andrew Fusek Peters and his wife Polly have written and edited over 55 titles including poetry, graphic novels and fiction and he has a new series coming out soon called 'The Skateboarding Detectives.'
Librarian, Mrs Heppell said: 'Andrew, aka The Tall Poet is very well known in the poetry world. He writes with attitude on contemporary topics that are really relevant to today's students. He is coming in to speak to the Year 10s and will also lead a workshop with the gifted and talented students.'
Another guest speaker will be Steve Skidmore, one half of the prolific writing duo, The 2Steves. He will be having 'an audience' with Years 7 and 8 at the end of Book Week where he will give them lots of writing ideas and they'll be able to ask him questions about his craft.
The theme of this year's Book Week is 'Read, White and Blue' and it will be a celebration of writing from all over the United Kingdom. There will be the usual highlights, such as the Year 9 quiz in the library and also a book fair where students can buy the latest titles. Please can students who are taking part in the Year 9 quiz organise themselves into teams of four and decide on a team name before the event, which will take place during Period 5 on Tuesday 27 May.
Mrs Heppell also asked members of staff to nominate the books that have influenced them most and there will be a display of these, together with the personalised comments. Mrs Heppell said: 'There are quite a number of these books which I haven't read and it's interesting to hear what they have meant to other people and the reasons and circumstances behind their choice.'
