Students take part in sponsored walk in aid of charity CRY

Wednesday 10th May 2017 by A. Read

Five Sixth Form students from Brooke Weston will be taking part in a sponsored ‘Heart of London Bridges Walk’ in London on 9th July in aide of CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young).

The walk is the 11th annual CRY ‘Heart of London Bridges Walk’ and offers the opportunity to show support for CRY, remember young people, raise funds and help raise awareness of young sudden cardiac death.

The route covers 10km and crosses 6 Thames bridges and includes great views of 12 of London’s famous landmarks, representing the 12 young sudden cardiac deaths that occur each week in the UK. Some of these landmarks include, Somerset House, St Paul’s Cathedral, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Southwark Cathedral, the Tower of London, City Hall and HMS Belfast.

The girls; Erin Wootton, Emma Scofield, Katie Searle, Annie Tyagi and Anjola Akande are taking part in memory of their friend and Brooke Weston student Miriam Lee, who passed away last August. The money raised goes towards, amongst other things, heart screenings of people aged 12-35 in the hope of identifying those at risk and getting them treatment. Erin said ‘Doing this walk is important to us as it is for a charity that is close to our hearts and gives us the chance to meet other people who have been through something similar. We hope that it will be a nice day out before we go off to do our own things in September, whilst also raising awareness for Sudden Arrhythmic Death Syndrome. We are truly grateful for everyone that has already shown support and donated. We have already exceeded our £250 target, which will pay for an ECG and consultation for one person, something that so important as it may prevent another friendship group from having to go through what we went through. Although the walk is not necessarily physically challenging, it is symbolic and in taking part we hope to promote awareness of the 12 young people a week that die of undiagnosed heart conditions.’
