Well done to teacher Sophie Reynolds who has successfully completed her first ever marathon raising more than £400 for Cancer Research. Miss Reynolds signed up for the Stratford marathon as she had been unsuccessful in the ballot for the London marathon that was held the same day. After 18 weeks of gruelling training she finished in a time of 4 hours 12 minutes.
Miss Reynolds said: ‘I ran the Stratford half marathon last year and got up to 20 and a half miles in training. On the actual day the weather was good and the course was nice although there were a couple of killer hills! It was good to talk to people on the way round. For some it was their first time, for others they had done lots before and they were encouraging and helpful. The last few miles were really hard and I did struggle for the last half mile. I thought it would be the easiest as I was so close to the finish but, by that point, the other runners were more spread out and a lot of them were starting to walk. When you are pushing yourself it is difficult to keep running when people are walking. My family and friends gave me a lot of support, and as the route was on two loops they saw me at the halfway point and at the finish line.
‘I would like to try a marathon again as I know I could step up the longer runs much earlier and there will not be so much of a psychological block when faced with going out on these really long runs as I would like to get a time of under four hours. Thanks for everyone who has donated money, people have been really generous and there has been lots of support.’
