Presenters from the RAF recruiting team visited Brooke Weston to highlight career opportunities in an interactive and fast-paced presentation.
Their demonstration included a brief overview of RAF careers and an explanation of the four forces of flight; lift, weight, thrust and drag. There were many practical examples of current technologies including the uses of drones, a demonstration of virtual reality goggles plus a videolink to a live demonstration of a mini jet engine powered by paraffin and diesel.
Students also learned about the Coanda effect of airflow using an airblower and beachball that has influenced aircraft design since the early 20th century right through to the latest aeronautic developments such as the massive Airlander airship, which is the size of a ten-storey building and powered by helium.
Presenters Becky Evans, Nathan Childs and Sam Dart, along with engagement officer Sgt Darell Parkinson from RAF Wittering, carried out one-hour presentations with both Year 8 and Year 9 students, each followed by a question and answer session.
Sgt Parkinson said: ‘In the Air Force we are crying out for certain types of engineers. We always need the aeroplane engineers but we also need cyberspace and ICT communications specialists because everything we do involves communications of some sort, particularly with our latest state of the art aircraft. We offer apprenticeships from the age of 16 but we are looking to recruit individuals who do more than the average, such as volunteering in the community and taking the opportunity to lead, whether that be in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme or as members of the Army or Air cadets. If students aspire to an engineering job then they need a minimum of maths and science at Grade C GCSE. In all of our trades they have to demonstrate the academic ability to learn what we are going to teach them. We hope the interactive presentation got them enthused about the range of projects and activities the RAF is involved in. As a career what you can get out of the Air Force is unbelievable; we offer top quality training, personal development opportunities, the chance to travel worldwide and also take part in a huge variety of sports.’
