Hand Helpers through to county final of Company Programme enterprise competition

Congratulations to Hand Helpers, a team of Sixth Formers that is through to the next round of the Company Programme, run by Young Enterprise. The scheme encourages young people to set up and run their own businesses, selling items at trade fairs across the region. Brooke Weston had two teams this year, Bopple that produced origami boxes filled with sweets and Hend Helpers that decorated and sold canvas shopping bags.

The area finals gave each team the chance to present to judges about their businesses, giving company reports, answering questions and presenting to an audience made up of other school teams, industry judges and representatives from Young Enterprise. Six teams from five schools competed for two places in the county finals and Hand Helpers was successful. The next stage of the competition will take place at the University of Northampton in April where six teams will battle to go forward to the regional final.

Megan Brown, the managing director of Hand Helpers said: ‘I didn’t expect our team get through to the county finals. The hardest part for me was the presentation because it was in front of 100 people so that was really nerve-racking. The judges asked really gruelling questions which were timed as well. It feels like quite an achievement to get through and so we are now preparing for the county final so we will update our presentation and trade stand and be more organised.

Both teams are mentored by local businessmen David Barrett and Marcus Atkins. Mr Atkins said ‘Each year there is a different challenge and a different dynamic. The teams have been quite big and there are challenges around organisational structure and delegation, particularly at MD level. They needed to delegate and the aspect of collaboration and taking responsibility is important this year.’
