Students make creative models of cell membranes

Year 12 students have come up with creative ways of representing the different parts of a cell membrane, using models, balloons and even cake. The biology students were tasked with making the phospholipid bilayer models by teacher Mr Hawskley. He said: ‘which is basically a cell membrane and it is so that they can learn about the structure of it. I said to be creative and they were. We had some who made models out of sponges and cotton buds. One group made theirs out of modelling balloons and round balloons. Three groups made cakes and one used chocolate fingers and Maltesers. They could make it out of anything at all as long as they could explain what was what in the model, what each part does, and any problems with the model and whether it could be improved upon. This is an assignment that the students do each year, however this year’s models are the best so far, they went above and beyond in their construction and creativity.’
