Sixth Former Jessica Dick is currently ranked as the fastest female in the UK for completing a 2x2 Rubik’s cube after clocking an impressive time of 5.12 seconds, over a second faster than her nearest rival. Jess only took up the hobby a year ago and since then has entered five competitions and can even solve the cube one handed!
She said: ‘I am the top ranking girl in the UK for completing the smaller 2x2 Rubik’s Cube, and the normal Cube one-handed. I took up the cube last year during exam season and I enjoy it. I figure out some stuff myself but I mostly watch videos to get to grips with the moves.’
Jess’s most recent event took place at Welwyn Garden City where she competes with regular cubes as well as the 2x2 and novelty varieties including the pyraminx. The scrambled cube is placed under a cover. After it is revealed competitors have 15 seconds to study it before their time starts. They have five attempts at each puzzle with their average score being counted.
Jess took part in two rounds of the Rubik’s competition completing it in 17.38 and 17.88 seconds respectively. Her biggest success was in the 2x2 event that she completed in just over five seconds. The one-handed round took longer at 35.34 seconds.
Jess plans to continue her hobby and said: ‘I want to do the Curvy Copter, which is really challenging. I completed it once but haven’t been able to do it again so far. I really recommend it as a hobby as there are lots of online groups, all the people at the competitions are really friendly and it is a cheap hobby where you can constantly learn new things and improve.’
