Year 12 student Conor Judge has been presented with the Best Individual Achiever award at the area finals of the Young Enterprise Scheme for his sterling work as head of Team Icon.
Each school nominated one student for the award and Conor won the overall category and glass trophy which was sponsored by Southfields School in memory of their staff member Jan Leyshon.
Conor was instrumental in developing a range of smoothie and shake recipes which were compiled into a glossy, professionally printed recipe book that the team sold to the public. When the team first formed no-one wanted to be managing director but Conor reluctantly volunteered.
Mr Jones said: ‘I don’t think Conor would ever have selected himself to be managing director of a company but he embraced the challenge. It wasn’t a role he found easy and it included many hurdles and it took a lot of work to get over each one, but he did. There was progress over four or five months where we watched him develop and the time it took for him to complete tasks got shorter and shorter as his confidence grew and he had the realisation that he could do it.
‘There was a point mid way through the project when he went from worrying about everything to talking to the public, believing in his product, being very enthusiastic and really becoming the glue in that team. He held them together and it was quite inspiring to watch. He stepped up to the role and it was really picked up on by the other business advisers and board members around the county. They all said he was an absolute gentleman. Each school nominated a student that they feel has gone above and beyond. It is a recognition of the journey he has been on and he deserved to be recognised for his own achievements.’
