American author Jennifer Niven is due to visit Brooke Weston during a UK tour after one of our students wrote her a fan letter. Year 9 student Lucy MacDonald was such a fan of Ms Niven’s work that she wrote to her and now her publishing company has got in touch with Brooke Weston to arrange a visit during Ms Niven’s forthcoming five-day UK book tour.
Librarian Mrs Adams said: ‘This is a really exciting opportunity for our students as Ms Niven won’t be visiting any other schools during her time in the UK. Although she has written adult non-fiction 'All the Bright Places' is her first young adult book and I think it could be the new ‘The Fault in our Stars’. At the very beginning you meet this boy and he has gone off to the tower at his college and you realise he is thinking of jumping off and there is a girl up there who is having the same thoughts. That is the first time they meet so it is not for the faint-hearted. He disappears at one point and it is all about her trying to find him and work out why he has disappeared.
‘Jennifer Niven is doing really well with this book. All of her Amazon reviews are five star and it has been featured as Guardian Book of the Month. I have only had one proof copy that is doing the rounds, but I have more on order and I urge all the Year 9 and 10 students to email me as soon as possible if they want to be involved as Jennifer's visit is an amazing opportunity. It is fabulous that she has chosen to come to Brooke Weston thanks to Lucy’s letter.'
The author visit will take place on Wednesday 25 March.
