The Sixth Form triathlon team have used the new Brooke Weston gym as part of their training routine. The 22 students had an initial induction where they were introduced to the equipment followed by an hour long training session to assess their fitness levels and goals.
They were given an induction by gym manager Scott Grant and accompanied by teacher Matt Clasper who said: ‘This is just to break the illusion of the gym being only for big strong weightlifters. It is somewhere where they can do a million different activities for a million different outcomes. They are training to compete in a triathlon so it is about using a lot of light weights, high reps and building endurance. For some it is the first time they have been in a gym and they are a bit apprehensive but the sort of training they are doing will help to dispel any trepidation.
‘The good thing about the equipment here is that not only is it new and top quality but all of the powered machines have the same display so once the students learn to use one they can transfer that knowledge to all the other machines so getting started is very easy. They are in here for an induction and enough time to set their one rep maximum as part of their training regime.
'In future weeks we will be doing a spin class, then two gym instructors will lead body pump, body combat and boxercise sessions in the dance studio. We also have a swimming session lined up so it is about building a whole package of exercise regimes to enable them to reach peak fitness and endurance.’
