The joint Year 10 and 11 boys’ rugby team have continued Brooke Weston’s winning streak with a 48 -7 victory over Lodge Park. The team, comprising four new players, were 26 -0 up just 12 minutes into the match and over the course of the game they scored eight tries and four conversions.
Coach Mr Clasper said: ‘It was the first time ever that Bradley Hammersley, Macaulay Crawford, James Barton and Harry Underwood had played for the school. James scored three tries and Macaulay Crawford scored a try and the other lads played fantastically, you wouldn’t have known it was their first time in the squad.
‘Everyone just got on with it, they were fantastic, the aggression of our lads in the contact was immense. Six and a half minutes into the game and we scored a try from inside our own half as Tom Abbott put his head down and ran through four or five players.
At every opportunity the lads that are more experienced passed and developed moves around the less experienced lads. In future games when we come up against stiffer competition we need 15 lads that have experience of running with the ball in their hands. If we just have five to six players running in try after try that won’t develop the team as a whole.
‘We are trying to really push rugby as for the lads that don’t play football we have got room for them in the rugby team. We have got 18 or 19 that we can play using rolling substitutions. It gives everybody a chance. You don’t have to be very skilful to play, you can be very aggressive, very strong, very fast or good at catching.
For me the highlight was the introduction of the less experienced players and the excellent way that they slotted into the game play plus the determination and aggression of the team blew the opposition away in the first seven minutes.’
