IEC students kicked off their triathlon training this year with the help of British Cycling. Catherine Ruffley, the central region coach, visited Brooke Weston with 20 mountain bikes and three cyclocross bikes for our students to use.
A course was marked out around the playing fields and the students first ran the course and then used the Pinarello mountain bikes to do sprints, off camber work and cross country biking. A total of 34 students from Year 12 took part. They have opted for the triathlon training segment of the IEC and future training sessions will include running, swimming and endurance tests.
Ms Ruffley said: ‘Cycling is a sport that is open to so many and for a lot longer than you might expect. There are 80 and 90-year-old still doing it, it isn’t something that you just for a few years. It is about developing a life-long passion for the sport. If I spot any potential Olympians then I will be recommending them to get involved with the right club and introducing them to the right people. It is about promotion and talent spotting.’
