Sixth Former James Barry is aiming for a career in the media having completed work experience in two different departments at Channel 4. He firstly spent time with their online team reviewing forthcoming shows and updating social media channels. Then he worked with the 4creative team that design the station’s logos and promotional material.
James is studying English Literature, Photography and Philosophy and Ethics A Levels plus BTEC Performing Arts. He said: ‘I have always been interested in working within the media so I wanted some work experience that would give me a foot in the door. Last year I did work experience with the online department. It was really good fun. I did things like updating their Tumblr page and posting bits on Twitter. I was able to watch the news being recorded so it was interesting to see how much work goes into producing that.
‘That led to my latest work experience with the creative team. It was quite surprising to see how much work goes into a single shot or 30 second advert. It was good to see all the different processes they use when coming up with a new logo or advert. I am quite creative so I was making some logos but combining them with my own photographic work. It was quite different but they seemed to like it. I learned a lot from both work experiences but I especially enjoyed working with the creative team.’
James is now planning to apply for an apprenticeship with the broadcaster: ‘I would prefer to learn on the job doing more creative things. Ideally I would really like to work with 4creative as they encourage new ideas and I could combine my photographic and creative skills. That team is definitely something that I would like to be a part of.’
