Our students who are shadowing the Carnegie Awards recently visited Lodge Park where they took part in quizzes and discussed the contenders for this year’s prizes.
They have spent weeks reading the 15 books shortlisted for the Carnegie Award given to fiction and the Greenaway Medal awarded for illustrated books. Each student was encouraged to take part in a ‘book push’ where they campaigned for their favourite books. The Carnegie Shadowing took place at Lodge Park Academy and students from across the town took part.
The visit followed a previous trip to Corby Business Academy where students discussed The Bunker Diary by Kevin Brooks and spoke to Special Constable Heather Lindley about criminology and the themes of the book.
Librarian Ms Adams said: ‘We had a discussion about the book which is quite hard hitting. Some children are kidnapped and held in an underground bunker. It is more about the transactions between the children and what they have to do. We talked about what sort of people commit these crimes and the crucial thing was reassuring the students that crimes such as this aren’t at all common, although it does make for a gripping book.'
The winners of the Carnegie Award and Greenaway Medal will be announced today.
