Students Maja Raczkowska, Katie Lines and Ioana Voidoc from Years 7, 8 and 9 will be representing Brooke Weston at an inter-academy bake off competition. They were among a group of ten students who volunteered to take part in the BWT Bake Off.
Each week they made a different dish and were given points for tasted, presentation and hygiene. After the six week trial Maja, Katie and Ioana were announced as the highest scoring competitors. They will now go on to face teams from other Brooke Weston Trust schools at the final which will be held at Corby Business Academy.
The students from all of the competing schools had to make cakes, pastry, bread, traybakes, scones and biscuits and they will work as a school team to create an afternoon tea, that will be judged by an independent panel with the highest scoring school winning the glory.
DT teacher Mrs Wykes said: ‘We scored them each week on their individual products and then the ones with the highest scores at the end went through to the final. They will now practice as a team and we go to Corby Business Academy on 17th July. They will do five hours of different challenges. They have got to make afternoon tea as a team and they are up against all of the other Trust schools.’
Announcing the results Mrs Wykes told the ten hopeful students: ‘It has been really hard because you have all put an amazing effort in and you should be really proud of yourselves, everyone has done very well to get to this point. We scored you every week on your hygiene, presentation and on your taste. Other factors that came into it were reliability and focus.’
Ioana said: ‘My favourite thing to cook would have to be the red velvet cupcakes because it took more effort which paid off in the end. I have been cooking for about two years.’
Katie said: ‘I like baking and will definitely choose cookery as a GCSE option. I love it and I have just made my sister’s birthday cake.’
Maja said: ‘The best thing was learning all the new skills and making friends in older year groups. I am the youngest one here and I have got to learn skills like making and piping icing. My favourite dish was the chocolate and orange traybake.’
