Year 12 students taking part in the IEC have undertaken specialist training sessions to prepare them for working with younger students. Topics including encouraging literacy and numeracy, safeguarding, special educational needs, phonics and classroom skills will be covered over a three-week period with staff from Brooke Weston and Oakley Vale leading the training. During the first session this Wednesday librarian Mrs Adams spoke about literacy issues while Mrs Payne and Mr Kernaghan covered the maths aspect.
The sessions have been organised by IEC co-ordinator, Mrs Duguid-Yeomans who said: ‘As part of the IEC these students have opted to either support our own students in lower school, or else have secured placements in primary schools and they will spend time each Wednesday afternoon in the classroom, helping out the class teacher and supporting the work of the younger students. It is about engaging their independence, showing them a wider set of skills and going beyond the curriculum.’
