Student Leanne Tough herded sheep, built fences and served in visitor centres during her work experience placement at Rutland Water. Leanne worked alongside paid members of staff and volunteers and saw all aspects of the operation and even wrote about her experiences for the organisation’s website.
She said: ‘I did all sorts of things. They tried to make sure I looked at places all over the reserve so I was working in the offices for a few days then I was on the reserve for quite a bit of the time. On the second day I was outside we were herding sheep to move them. Then I was knocking in fence posts in to make a cattle run. It was hard physical work but as I am really into wildlife and the outdoors it was an ideal placement for me. The highlight was probably meeting everybody because they gave me a lot of tips on how to get a job. I would have liked to have had a two week placement and was quite sad to leave.’
