Congratulations to Year 9 student Ryan Hammett who has been selected for the East Northants rugby squad. Ryan, who has been playing the sport for 18 months, underwent trials in Kettering, Oundle and Rushden where selectors were looking at players’ tackling, passing and fitness skills. About 40 people took part in the trials and 25 people got through.
Ryan, who plays with S&L U-14s and the Year 9 and 10 teams at Brooke Weston, said: ‘I was nervous because everyone was double my height, they were massive! I like rugby because it is a really physical sport. I found out on Sunday that I had got through the trials. I was just coming off the pitch after playing a game with Rushden and my dad told me so I was really excited. Our first training session is on 16 October and they are going to pick a 22-man squad for a tournament four days later.’
