Two students were part of a team that won silver at a recent international gymnastics competition. Mia Spinelli and Jessica Quach were both part of a six-strong team invited to compete at the event in Malta. Both are members of the Corby Gymnastic Academy and they have been training for the event for the past year.
Other teams from the UK as well as the Netherlands, France, Italy and Malta took part. There was an opening ceremony and the competition comprised four disciplines; vault, bars, beam and floor work. Everyone took part in each event individually and the three best scores from each team counted towards the final total. The Corby team attained second place and the girls were presented with a silver cup.
Jessica, from Year 8 said: ‘I train five days a week and I am better at the bars and the vault. It is all about strength and determination and I spend 15 hours a week training. The best thing was being in Malta among all the other teams. It was fun competing and meeting the other girls. They warm up differently and train differently. We learned things from them and they learned things from us. The two-day event started with an opening ceremony and we got to watch some of the top girls compete. We also went to a water park and had a farewell barbecue where we met everyone.’
Mia, from Year 7, also trains for around 15 hours a week. She started the sport aged eight and is currently the Level 4 County champion, a title she won after competing against 30 other gymnasts from Northamptonshire. She said: ‘I was pleased with some of my pieces but found it a bit scary because it was my first international competition! We went up as a group to get the cup and I enjoyed competing against different people.’
Both girls already compete at county and regional gymnastics and aspire to compete at national level. Both have been training with Corby Gymnastic Academy for years and they recently met Olympian and World Champion gymnast Beth Tweddle when she came along to open their new building in Fleming Road on the Earlstrees Industrial Estate.
