Textiles teacher Miss Moore has launched a design competition after a visit to Graduate Fashion Week where students got to see top work by upcoming British designers. Students from all year groups are eligible to submit three portfolio pages showing a design idea, progression and finished fashion sketch. The best one will win a £20 voucher from Topshop or Topman. Competition details are listed below and entries must be received by a closing date of 24th June.

The competition was inspired by the trip to the show at Earl’s Court. Miss Moore took 14 students, mainly from Year 9. She said: ‘It featured some of the best graduates from fashion courses around the country and gave our students the chance to see a catwalk show and talk to young designers about their university courses and career prospects.

‘Each university’s work is displayed and the lecturers are there as well. A lot of people from the industry attend as they are looking to scout new talent. We went to watch the De Montfort catwalk show and their collections this year were really good. Our students were so inspired and excited, the show was buzzing.

‘They spoke to the fashion students to find out where they got their inspiration from, how they followed their work through and how they put their portfolios together. They have seen hundreds of people’s ideas and it gets them thinking and opens their eyes to the possibilities.

‘There was lots of layering and use of unusual materials that you wouldn’t normally put together. There were some very bright colours, unusual prints and fun accessories such as fur backpacks and double-layered silk trousers with a plastic overlay. Some of the items were simple but with beautiful cutwork or prints. The graduates have to make about six outfits for their collection and were very happy to talk about their work. The best universities attend and showcase their best students. If you want young people to be inspired to join the industry then they have to visit Graduate Fashion Week to experience the unique buzz and get a flavour of all of the jobs and career options that are available, not just in the UK but around the world.’
