Chocolate cake, jelly beans and ice-cream sundaes were just some of the sweet treats that have inspired our Year 7 art students. They have been studying the work of sculptor Claes Oldenburg who created oversized sculptures of everyday objects. All of the Year 7s have been working on the three week long project.
The students worked in pairs and their artwork took three weeks to complete.
Teacher Mrs Strydom said: ‘I wanted them to get a view of Claes Oldenburg’s work and take simple everyday food objects and making them into something artistic. I asked them to use Oldenburg to inspire their own creative giant sweets.
They constructed it from recycled materials, newspaper, card, artstraws and things from home. They did their structure and then collaged it and added finishing touches. They all worked well and I am really pleased with some of the details they have included like the shading and texture. They are writing an evaluation of the project but I am really pleased with the standard and variety of the finished artwork.’
