Young tennis hopeful Joe Tyler is now fifth in the GB rankings in his class having taken part in a recent tournament where he received prizes including a pair of custom designed tennis shoes.
Joe, from Year 9, competed in two recent events and won the boys' 14 and Under singles category at the Sutton Easter Grade 2 tournament. ‘I got two tennis kits, a jumper, a bag and a pair of Nike tennis shoes that I got to personalise myself. I am happy to have been able to win the tournament and that has pushed me back up to the top few positions. If I can win the next couple of tournaments that should push me up even higher, maybe to the top three.
‘I don’t do anything specific to train for the tournaments I just make sure I am on top of my game, fully fit and striking the ball well and maybe instead of training doing a couple of match practices to get match fit as well.’
His next tournaments are a Grade 1 in May and more in the summer. Some are by invitation only depending on the players’ rankings. Joe will usually play one or two tournaments each month with the pace ramping up in the summer when there are virtually constant tournaments for a six-week period.
Joe said: ‘Hopefully I will be starting to play a couple more European tournaments. Two weeks ago I played one in London. It is tough because a lot of time you have to go abroad and I don’t really have time so I try and do the ones in this country when I can.
‘It is hard balancing my tennis and schoolwork. When I have attended a tournament then having to catch up on school work is quite tiring but I have good teachers who give me work. At the moment it is OK but over the next couple of years it may get quite tough. I am very competitive, possibly because I have had three older brothers so I have always wanted to beat them!’
