Harry Underwood will represent the Anglia region at the All English Schools race next month, after getting the running bug at Brooke Weston’s sports day.
Harry was in Year 8 when he won the 1500m event in July. Since then he has qualified as a district runner finishing fourth out of 60 at a cross country race in West Glebe Park and was selected to represent Anglia after he came in the top eight at a race in Grantham, finished the 3.6km in a time of 15.59.
He is now training hard for the 5km English Schools Cross Country Championships at Catton Park, Derbyshire on 16th March. Harry said: ‘I only started running because I won the 1500m at sports day and so far I have been running with Kettering Town Harriers for about four weeks. There are intense training sessions. We have to do different stretches and drills to warm up and do sets of 200m and 300m sprints.
'My friends at Harriers are supportive. My friend, Ethan is a really good runner and we run together. Running with him has made me strive to get a higher place and enhance my performance. I have now got four weeks of intense training to look forward to before the event in Derbyshire as the top 30 runners from the whole event will go on to represent England in an international race!’
