Year 7 student Kiera Buckwell’s artwork, highlighting the dangers of seasonal crime, will be seen by thousands of Christmas shoppers. Her design won a Northamptonshire Police competition and has been reproduced on hundreds of shop posters and flyers, which will be handed out to shoppers over the festive period.
Kiera was presented with a certificate and prize by PCSO Naomi Burkart who told students in assembly: ‘Over the past three weeks there has been a massive crime prevention scheme in Northampton. We ran a competition to get young people to show how to protect property and valuables at Christmas time. Kiera was one of the winners with her ‘Criminals can crash your Christmas’ message highlighting the importance of locking windows and doors and not leaving valuables in sight.
‘It is brilliant, it is the right sort of message that we are trying to put out at this time of year about personal safety, car safety and property marking, so this competition was an extra initiative to get the message across get younger people thinking about crime prevention, not only around Christmas time but in general.’
Kiera said: ‘I took the idea of a Christmas tree and valuables and came up with the idea of the poster. It is the first competition I have entered.’
