The Year 8 and 9 rugby team has been unbeaten in every match so far this season, scooping around 180 points with their opponents being unable to score. The boys, who train after school on Tuesday, have notched up high scores such as 67-nil against teams including Buccleuch Academy, Kingswood and King's Lynn. Their latest match against Wrenn School unfortunately had to be abandoned due to injury, but not before our squad had notched up 47 points by half time.
Mr Clasper said: ‘Our success is down to the experience of the team and where some are lacking experience just down to sheer hard work. We have got a very strong aggressive set of forwards. What we are doing is playing very aggressively and we are winning a lot of their ball. When they finally do get the ball we hit their runners hard and win the ball back off them, starving them of possession. Then when we get the ball it is literally every man and his dog chasing the player with the ball. It then becomes like a cavalry charge, every player hungry for possession.
‘We are unbeaten in five fixtures with no tries against and have scored about 180 points to nil. We haven’t had that before in our school history, we have had good teams and we have had unbeaten teams but not at this level. With it being a mixed Year 8 and Year 9 team playing predominantly Year 9 fixtures, it is not as if we are dragging the older ones down to the younger level, we are pulling the younger ones up a level. It is a successful formula.’
