To mark National School Sports Week students at Brooke Weston tried out a range of new sports, all of which are featuring in the Olympics this year. Miss Feeley and Ms Bryan devised an activity programme that included archery, volleyball, tae kwon do, rhythmic gymnastics and handball. Sports coaches from the local area came in to share their expertise.
Ms Bryan said: ‘The feedback has been really positive, especially for the archery which was taught by Chas Wilson from Corby Archers. The idea is that we will work with local sportsmen and hopefully direct any students who are interested to their clubs.’
Miss Feeley said: ‘We have filled lots of the lessons with different activities. This event has been very Olympic-themed. Years 7, 8 and 9 have been given Olympic countries to learn about; they have got to come up with a fact file and find out where it is in the world, their flag and national anthem. Years 10s and 12s have got an Olympic quiz so they have got five days to complete their quiz.'
Mr Clasper said: ‘We are doing sports like handball which is like five a side football except you run and carry the ball and throw it into the goal. It gives everyone a flavour of different types of sports so hopefully it will generate interest and get more people involved in them.’
