Our Year 8 boys lifted the trophy in a recent district rugby tournament having convincingly beaten teams from three local schools. It was the first time that the 12-strong squad had played in a tournament and they scored a try in the first minute of the first game!
They played at Stewarts & Lloyds RFC with ten minutes each way and tries worth five points. During the first bout against Kettering Buccleuch Academy our team scored five tries to nil with the following game, against a team from King John, ending in a score of 20-nil to Brooke Weston.
The final against Kingswood was nail-biting. Teacher Mr Clasper said: ‘We scored a try in the first half. In the last four minutes of the match they scored a try to make it five-all and it was heading towards stalemate. In the very last second our lads scored a try in the far corner. As soon as they scored the final whistle went, so we won.
‘The winning try on the third match was scored by Tariq Manji, with stand out performances from Lewis Gillespie and Zak Halligan who has recently taken up rugby but didn’t look like a beginner. However, all the lads played fantastically well, they were all up for it!'
Well done to the winning team comprising Tom Abbott, Macauley Crawford, Joe and Tom Cuddihy, Lewis Gillespie, Zak Halligan, Ryan Hendry, Tyler Jones, Tariq Manji, Dan McKay, Bradley Porch and Charles Price.
Rugby training for Year 7 and 8 students takes place after school on Thursdays. All are welcome to turn up.
