Key Stage 4 Options Booklet 2017/2018

Art Department

Students have the opportunity to specialise in the art subject that best reflects their ability, with artistic techniques ranging from 3-dimensional ceramic constructions to fine painting and draughtsmanship to digitally manipulated imagery and commercial art. The choice of materials is endless and the support of subject specialist teachers enables students to achieve any set goal.

Creativity is fostered through exciting assignments that cater for individual interest. The students are encouraged to experiment with ideas and materials within a nurturing environment. Students who have successfully completed an arts-based GCSE have gone on to pursue careers as diverse as museum curation, illustration, graphic designer, Free-lance Photographer and Fine Artist.

Trips and Visits

During the course students have the opportunity to spend a day at an art gallery to experience original works of art first-hand. This visit takes place during Year 10 and it is recommended that all art students take part in order to extend their creative horizons. The trips take place within the normal school day and there is a small charge for transport.

OverviewThis is an optional course, taught over two lessons. It comprises of one coursework unit, totalling 60% of the GCSE. Students will undergo an introductory skills based course to establish individual strengths. They will then complete a selection of units from which one coursework unit will be compiled. This will result in either a 3-Dimensional or 2-Dimensional outcome depending on the identified strengths of each student. Students will be given an externally set examination paper during Term 3 of Year 11, culminating in a 10-hour final examination during Term 4.
Units studied

Unit 1: Students will be required to explore an idea and respond to a theme in a personal way to produce a 2D outcome using the following areas of fine art: Drawing; Painting; Printmaking; Mixed media.

Unit 2: Students will be required to explore an idea and respond to a theme in a personal way to produce a 3D outcome using the following areas of fine art: Construction techniques in Ceramics; Sculpture; and Relief work.

Progression to Sixth FormThis course can lead to the study of Fine Art or Photography at A level.

OverviewThis is an optional course, taught over two lessons. It comprises of two coursework units, totalling 60% of the GCSE. Students will have three terms to complete each unit of work, resulting in a large-scale final piece. Students will be given an externally set examination paper during Term 3 of Year 11, culminating in a 10-hour final examination.
Units studied

Unit 1: Students will show their ability to use photographic techniques and processes to respond to a theme. These techniques include: Lighting; Aperture and Shutter speed; Viewpoint; Digital manipulation and Experimental Imagery.

Unit 2: Students will apply the techniques learnt to explore an idea and respond to a theme in a personal way to produce a final image outcome based on one of the following areas in photography: Portraiture; Location Photography; Studio Photography; Fashion Photography; or Documentary Photography.

Progression to Sixth FormThis course can lead to the study of Fine Art or Photography at A level.

Overviewhis is an optional course, taught over two lessons. It is designed for students wishing to gain an understanding of the graphic design industry and develop the necessary skills across a range of areas within the subject. This qualification will give students a good understanding of marketing products and advertisement tactics. This is an optional course, taught over two lessons. It comprises of three coursework units (worth 60% of the course) and one externally set unit (worth 40% of the course). Students will have two terms to complete each unit of work, resulting in a large-scale final piece. Students will be given an externally set examination paper during Term 3 of Year 11, culminating in a 10-hour final examination.
Units studied

Unit 1: Understanding graphic processes, materials and techniques.

Unit 2: Research sources of ideas in a graphic design context.

Unit 3: Develop ideas and graphic design solutions.

Unit 4: Plan, produce and present final graphic design work.

Progression to Sixth FormThis course can lead to the study of Photography at A level.
